Teaching

The main defining features of Hugues Navez’s teaching are his open-mindedness respectful of the different styles, interpretations and techniques of the guitar, and last but not least his passion.

He is extremely keen to impart his musical knowledge and pass on the artistic experience inherited from the great masters and professors he studied with or whose master classes he attended : Ilse and Nicolas Alfonso, Jean-Philippe Gruneissen, Carel Harms, Alexandre Lagoya, Hélène Louvrier, Ako Ito, Henri Dorigny, Peter McCutcheon, Leo Brouwer, Sharon Isbin, Costas Cotsiolis, Fritz Buss, Ichiro Suzuki, Kai Nieminen, Konrad Junghanel…

Hugues Navez starts teaching at age 17. After having been Professor in several Belgian Music Academies and secondary schools in Brussels, he becomes assistant of Ilse Alfonso at the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles (Royal Conservatory of Brussels).

In 1999, he is appointed full Professor of the guitar class at the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles (Royal Conservatory of Brussels). He so takes up the torch of Ilse and Nicolas Alfonso who created this class, one of the oldest in Europe, in 1965.

The Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles (Royal Conservatory of Brussels) founded in 1832 provides the highest standard of tuition. It welcomes talented students of all nationalities who come studying for their Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctorate degrees as well as for a Music Teaching certification programme (pedagogy).

The students of his guitar class perform regularly in concerts : Château du Karreveld, Flagey, the Brussels Parliament, the Brussels Musical Instruments Museum (MIM), Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), Maison de la Musique, Salon Musicora in Paris…

Annually Hugues Navez organizes a series of public master classes, in collaboration with the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles (Royal Conservatory of Brussels) featuring numerous famous artists and pedagogues such as Gérard Abiton, Nicolas Achten, Miguel Barbera, Jorge Cardoso, Olivier Chassain, Patrick de Belleville, Valérie Duchâteau, Éric Franceries, José María Gallardo del Rey, Jean-Philippe Gruneissen, Eleftheria Kotzia, Leon Koudelak, Philippe Mariotti, Stein-Erik Olsen, Emmanuel Rossfelder, Galina Vale, Ana Vidovic, Frédéric Zigante…

He gives also many master classes during his tours and for the European Erasmus Exchange Programme : The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, the Beijing Central Conservatory, the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, the Conservatories of Shanghai, Dakar, Budapest, the École Britten in France…
Every summer and winter Hugues Navez is the Professor at the Brussels Guitar Master Classes.
